I’ve watched her get walked on, over and over again, still she goes back for more. This is the second time I’m witnessing the shithead, she calls a boyfriend, with his arm around a blonde that is definitely not Maddie. Fuck…what am I going to do? Yes, I am the asshole that didn’t tell her that I saw him the first time and now this. It’s not for a lack of trying, I’ve hinted, though never coming right out and saying it. I’ve been trying to spare her feelings, thinking she needs to see it with her own eyes. You know the saying…seeing is believing. Tonight might just be the night that changes everything.

Feelings have developed for Maddie that I didn’t know I was having, until they slapped me right in the face. Unfortunately, that happened when I overheard her telling her girlfriends about this great guy she started dating. But I won’t fuck up our friendship, so for now, I’ll sit back and wait until she realizes it all on her own. She’s dating Mr. Wrong and could have Mr. Right, who is standing in front of her. We’ve become close over the last couple of years, and seeing her hurt is going to kill me, but at least she’ll finally see what kind of guy he really is.

Tonight is Wednesday, our weekly dinner date. We’ve been meeting here for the last six to seven months: same time, same night, same place. It’s seven o’clock, and any minute, she’ll be coming through the door.

Justin, her so-called boyfriend, is sitting in the far corner of the bar when she walks in. His back is to her, so she doesn’t notice him and he doesn’t see her either. If I point him out to her right away, I could look like a jackass…though if I don’t point him out to her, I’m definitely going to look like a jackass, so pretty much by the end of the night I’m going to be fucked.

She looks incredible, as always. As her tiny frame comes closer to me, I’m not the only one in the bar that takes her in for a moment. I see heads turn and a few guys nod in her direction. Her long blonde hair is pulled back into a ponytail that hangs to the middle of her back, and the smile on her face goes all the way up to her light blue eyes. Grinning back at her, I glance at her entire body and stop at her legs, which are exposed in the cargo shorts she’s wearing. Damn…there are no other words.

“Hey Cupcake, how are you tonight?”

“I’m good. You been here long?”

“Nah, got here a few minutes ago,” I say, as the guilty feeling starts to set in.

We sit at the bar like we always do, ordering our food and drinks when there is giggling coming from across the room. My eyes travel to the sound then back to Maddie. She glances over once, twice, and then a third time, before she begins to slide off her stool.

Walking behind her, I follow closely. I’m not sure how this is going to end, but I’m pretty sure it’s not going to be good.

  Two weeks earlier

I head out of the team house, jump in my truck, and drive to a bar in town. I’m meeting up with a bunch of the Yamaha racing team at nine. I walk in, noticing the guys are all standing at a round bar table. There’s several pitchers of beer and frosty mugs waiting to be filled up.

We play pool, shoot darts, and bullshit about how the season’s going. There is a two-week break right now; next race will be at Unadilla, New York on August thirteenth. Our team manager said we all get one night to relax and enjoy, then it’s back to the track for us all. It seems nice to just hang out and loosen up on a Friday night, instead of practicing until dark then crashing in our beds.

As the night goes on, I see Justin, Maddie’s boyfriend, with a group of others walk in. And his arm are around a bleach blonde. I turn and look one more time directly at him, he smiles and nods, as he goes by. What the fuck? Did he break up with Mads? She hasn’t called me today or maybe she finally woke up. Since it’s late now, she’ll be hearing from me in the morning.

I’m standing at the bar, waiting for a round of shots to be poured, so I can take them over to the guys when the prick walks over.

“Hey, dude, what’s up?” Facing me, he leans one hip against the bar; he says it as if we are the best of friends.

“Nothing, just chillin’ with the guys tonight? You?”

“Same. Well, other than the ladies that tagged along with us.”

“Yeah, I see that. You and Maddie call it quits?”

“Naw, don’t get your hopes up there, big boy.” Slapping me on the back of my shoulder makes me want to knock his teeth out.

My face turns hard, and my jaw twitches, as the anger that is brewing starts to boil up. “What the fuck are you doing with your arms around that girl then?”

“You know what they say, what she doesn’t know won’t hurt her,” he chuckles, only making the want to punch him even stronger.

“No, I don’t know that saying. Especially when it comes to Maddie.”

“What, are you going to be a bitch and run back and tell her?”

“No, but I guarantee you are.”

“Oh yeah.” We turn and face each other, nose-to-nose as the words start to fly.

“Look, asshole, Maddie’s better than you and deserves to be treated way better than this.”

  “Well, how abo
ut you worry about you, and I’ll worry about Maddie.”

“Seriously, you tell her or I will.”

“Doesn’t it suck being so jealous of me?”

“Trust me, I’m not jealous.” I let out a chuckle in his face.

“Really, not jealous that she lays under me at night? And the fact that I’ll probably be banging her, after I nail that blonde over there, and there’s not a thing you can do about it.”

That’s all it took. I threw the first punch, and I wasn’t worried about what he was going to do about it either. He fell backwards into a barstool as I lunged forward at him. His arms locked around my neck as his other hand connected with my jaw. I was able to jab into his side a couple times, before the guys I was with were able to pull me off him.

As my arms were let go, once we both were back on our feet, the look of disgust on my face says it all. I despise the man; I will never like him. The guys pat me on the back to get me to come back to the table. Just as I’m ready to walk away, the fucker opens his mouth one more time.

“Thank you, this will only help me get more sympathy from Maddie. Probably will earn me a day in bed, too.” He turns and walks away as he laughs.

“Oh, after I talk to her, she’ll hate you.”

With his back to me still, he shouts over his shoulder, “Doubt it. It’s your word against mine and she’ll believe me.” Letting out another laugh only makes me want to tackle him one more time.

  “Fucker.”

He walks over to the girl he walked in with and she wraps herself around him, then wipes off his lip with a cloth. Leaning up, she places a kiss to his lips; he welcomes her affection all while looking over at me. A grin spreads across his face as fire burns up mine. I need to get out of here before I kill him.

The next day the only thing I heard from Maddie was in a text.

  Maddie: Not happy with you.

  Me: Why’s that exactly?

Maddie: Well, looking at my boyfriend’s face, shows me you couldn’t control yourself while out with the guys.

Me: Clearly he forgot to tell you why that happened.

  Maddie: He did.

Me: And what exactly did he share with you?

At this point I can feel myself getting irritated.

Maddie: Jesse, don’t play stupid. He told me that the girl you were hitting on was pushing you away, because you were so drunk, and you got pissed when she was just talking to Justin. Then you started a fight with him.

Me: Oh, really that’s how it went down, did it?

Maddie: It’s bullshit, Jes, I don’t know why you hit him. I’m really pissed at you.

Me: Ok, well you better ask him to check his facts. He’s a tool, Mads, and you deserve better.

Maddie: Let me decide what I need. Now knock off the shit with him, please.

Our little fight lasted about a week before she reached out to me, this time it was to see if I was over being a dumb ass, and if I wanted to go to the store with her. I wasn’t trying to be an ass. But I wasn’t going to try and contact her, when clearly she had already believed him before she even heard my side. I decided at that point, as much as it pained me to see her getting screwed over, she needed to see it with her own eyes before she was ever going to believe it.

We hung out that day and never spoke of what happened that night. I thought about telling her the truth, but I was sure it’d just come back to bite me in the ass, somehow some way, so my lips were sealed. It was if nothing ever happened, and I guess, it was better that way than her not being around at all. I missed her for the last several days.

  Present Day

So here we are today, back at the bar, and she’s walking toward the asshole himself. She is about to see things first hand; let’s see him sweet talk his way out of this one. It’s about to get ugly.

  “What the hell, Justin?”

“Hey, babe.” He pushes the girl away from him and slides out of the booth they are sitting in.

“Don’t babe, me. Who is this and don’t say your sister?”

“Let’s go over there and talk.” He points to another table across the room. I figure it is his way of trying to squirm his way out of it. He doesn’t want that girl or me to hear.

“No, tell me right here. So, I’ll ask one more time…who is SHE?” Maddie raises her voice over the music, so there is no mistaking what she’s asking.

When he doesn’t start to speak quickly enough for her liking, Maddie takes over the conversation again.

“Well then, let me, hello I’m Maddie, Justin’s girlfriend. And you are?” She reaches over and holds her hand out to the girl directly. The shocked look on this girl’s face shows us both that this chick has no idea that he’s dating someone.

“Girlfriend?” You see her throat take a big swallow.

“Yes, girlfriend, wait I should rephrase that…ex-girlfriend.”

“Babe, it’s not what you think. Nothing is happening here. She was just sitting here so I stopped to say hello.”

Just about now is where it starts to get interesting. Maddie’s hand comes up so fast he doesn’t see it coming. It makes contact with his face perfectly; the sound is nice and loud, and it completely makes my night.

He stands there stunned, and I have to say, I kinda am too, but I’m loving it while he’s hating it, I’m sure. A chuckle escapes me before I have a chance to cover it up with a cough. Justin looks over at me and if looks could kill, I’d be dead.

  “Really, Maddie?”

“Yes, REALLY, Justin. You can stay right here with the trash you brought with you. I can’t believe I trusted you when you said there was no one else. I should have known better.”

“Ha, you should have but you, little girl, are pretty gullible.”

  “Screw you.”

“That’s enough, Justin.” I can’t stand here any longer without saying something. I can tell he’s just about ready to run his mouth and say whatever it takes to make her cry.

“Oh, and what are you going to do about it? You’re so pussy-whipped by her that you’ve kept your mouth shut, so she wouldn’t be mad at you.”

  “What’s he talking about, Jesse?”

“Let’s go, Maddie, he’s not worth it.”

  “No, answer me, Jesse.”

  “Yeah, Jesse, answer her.”

“Fuck you, man, Maddie deserves so much better than you.” We are now standing chest to chest, and I’m doing everything in my power to control my temper that is slowly rising.

“Let me guess, she needs a man like you. Well clearly, she prefers her man to be her bitch, so you two are perfect together.”

“Enough! You obviously like to play games, but this is one you won’t win. Go to hell.”

Maddie turns and walks away and I’m right behind her. “That’s right run behind her like a lost puppy dog.”

That’s it; he hit my last nerve. I turn back around, and take one punch, he drops back into the booth and I walk away. Who’s the bitch now?

I find Maddie sitting back at the bar, in the same spot we left from, and I can’t help but wonder what’s going through her mind. I tread lightly; hoping that she doesn’t ask what Justin was talking about again. Easing down on the stool, I pick up my beer and take a swig. I can feel the pain radiating off her body to mine, causing my hands to shake with a need to protect her. Looking straight ahead, I try and keep my composure, waiting for her to speak. Even though it’s only been a few minutes, it feels like hours.

“Jesse, I need the truth. What was Justin talking about? Do you know something I don’t?”

  “Mads…”

“Please, Jesse, the truth. No more lies.”

“The night he and I got into it, he was out with some blonde and all over her, then his mouth started to run until I threw a punch.”

  “Was that the only time?”

  “Not exactly.”

  “Tell me.”

“I’ve seen him out on different occasions with groups of people and there’s been girls. Lo
ts of them, but other than his arms around their shoulders, I didn’t see anything else. We’ve exchanged words every time about how I’m watching and waiting for him to fuck up.”

  “Why didn’t you say anything?”

I continue to keep my focus on the bottle in front of me, instead of looking over at her. Her eyes haven’t veered off her own bottle, which makes this even more difficult. Usually looking into her eyes, I can tell what she’s thinking or feeling, but sitting here now; I have no idea.

“Maddie, I’ve tried. We all have. We’ve told you to watch out for him, that he’s very shady and is always flirting, but you only want to see the good side of him. How that is, I will never understand, but really in the end, it was your decision to make.”

The noise going on around us is drowned out by the sound of our own hearts beating. Mine feels like it’s about ready to come out of my chest. I can’t figure out what to say or do next. I want to wrap my arms around her, but I know right now I need to let her come to me. I sit completely still, bow my head and wait.

Seconds turn into minutes, which actually feels more like hours, when in fact it hasn’t been that long at all. She finally turns on her stool and faces me.

“I’m not exactly sure why you thought it was okay not to tell me everything. Though I do think you thought you were doing the right thing by letting me see it for myself. I can’t think sitting here, so I’m going to go.”

“Mads, you didn’t…” I reach for her arm to stop her but she just continues to walk away.

  “Good-bye, Jesse.”

  MADDIE

I’ve been hurting all week. Last Wednesday, I found out that I had been both lied to and cheated on, which caused me to ask Jesse to leave me alone. I didn’t want to say something I’d regret. I haven’t spoken to anyone. Both Ansley and Kenna, my two best friends and old roommates, have been texting me, trying to get me to open up, but I really don’t want to talk about it. I don’t blame anyone but myself, so I’m going to wallow in my sorrows for a while, feeling like a fool doesn’t feel good at all.
